Welcome

Picture

I am an ethnomusicologist, saxophonist, and Chair of the Department of Musicology in the Frost School of Music at the University of Miami. My research and writing explore music, identity, and religion in the Caribbean and the United States. I am also a faculty affiliate of UMiami's Center for Global Black Studies.

In addition to my scholarly work, I maintain an active career as a performing musician, touring and recording as a saxophonist with the Brian Blade Fellowship Band and many other artists.

From 2024 to 2026, I served as the University of Miami's Academic Ombudsperson, and from 2023 to 2025 I served as Associate Dean in the Office of Academic Enhancement for Undergraduate Affairs.

In 2022, I was elected to a four-year term on the Board of Directors of the Society for Ethnomusicology and to a two-year term as President of the Society (2023-2025). Previously, I served as Secretary of the U.S. Branch of the International Association for the Study of Popular Music and on the Executive Board of the Haitian Studies Association. Before joining the University of Miami faculty, I taught at the University of Chicago, Yale University, and the University of Virginia.
